Tamar Valley Walks
Starts from: Cargreen water front.
Distance: 3.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy walk on tracks and roads with no steep hills.
Description: A Cornish walk that introduces you to the river Tamar with some splendid views of the river. There is an opportunity to make a short excursion to a wild life reserve on the banks of the river.
Walk 2 Tamar Valley Discovery Trail
Starts from: Bere Ferrers railway station
Distance: About 6.75 miles
Difficulty: A moderate walk as there are quite a few hills both up and down
Description: A walk around the bottom half of the Bere Peninsular that introduced you to the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail that you will encounter on most of the other walks in this series. A small amount of minor road walking mainly footpaths and tracks passing over the railway and walking next to the river Tamar and Tavy. To get to the start you could use the train or bus.
Starts from: Weir Quay on the river Tamar
Distance: 6miles but there is a 4 mile option.
Difficulty: Moderate walk as there are a couple of steep hills.
Description: There are or rather were two silver lodes crossing the Bere peninsular slightly less than a mile apart. This walk will take you up one and down the other walking through several abandoned mines.
Walk 4 Calstock Long and Short walk
Starts from: The Tamar Inn Calstock
Distance: 3.5 miles but can be extended to 7 miles if you do the Cotehel Quay loop.
Difficulty: A moderate walk as you do have to walk up to the church that stands above the village.
Description: An outstandingly beautiful walk for the views and in the spring to see the daffodils in the hedge banks. You will visit Okel Tor mine a Roman fort and a mineral railway from where you can extend it to a 7 mile walk by going back via the National Trust Cotehele Quay. For an even better day out you could take the train to Gunnislake go across the viaduct and get off at Calstock Station. Check the train timetable first.
Walk 5 Morwelham and the mine railway
Starts either from: Maddacleave car park part of the Tamar Trails or Morwelham
Distance: 5 miles with the opportunity to shorten it to 3 miles by starting at the Ship Inn at Morwelham.
Difficulty: A fairly easy walk if you start at Morwelham but moderate if starting at the Maddacleave car park as there is a long hill to walk down and then back up.
Description: A pleasant wood land walk steeped in mining history. You will walk along the mine railway track and visit a disused riverside quay called Newquay. Morwelham quay is a tourist attraction but it’s not open all the year around. When you reach the village you could if you wish buy a ticket to visit the quay and mine railway or just have an ice cream.
Walk 6 Gunnislake Mines and Manure
Starts from: near Gunnislake railway station.
Distance: Just over 5 miles
Difficulty: A generally easy walk although a bit hilly.
Description: This Cornish walk of just over 5 miles will take you past the Tamar Manure Navigation canal and past mines and a huge chimney that you can explore. A section of delightful woodland walk. A mixture of tracks paths and minor roads.
Starts from: Tamar Trails car park at Gulworthy
Distance: Its about 5 miles but can be shortened to 4.
Difficulty: An easy walk mostly following wide gravelled trails.
Description: This is a Tamar Trails walk through Devon Great Consoles where you will find a number of woodland walks even as far as Morwelham. You can download their walks leaflet here as well.
Starts from: The village car park
Distance: just under 4 miles
Difficulty: A very easy walk
Description: Quite a short walk that takes you through the Tamar Valley village of Luckett on the Cornish side. A rural walk but also passing old mine workings last worked in the 1940’s.
Walk 9 Sydenham Damerel Long Walk
Starts from: Scrubtor car park part of the Tamar Trails.
Distance: A 6 mile walk but can be shortened by going on the Sydenham Damerel Short Walk which is just 3.8 miles
Difficulty: A generally easy walk with a few ups and downs the short walk being even easier than the long walk.
Description: This rural walk is the last to use the Tamar Valley Discovery trail. It will take you through the hamlet of Townlake and has some magnificent Tamar valley views.
Walk 10 Horsebridge to New Bridge
Starts from: Horsebridge.
Distance: 9.5 miles
Difficulty: A moderate walk mostly along the river bank but with a few hills.
Description: Our final walk does the full circuit between the river crossing at Gunnislake and the next river crossing at Horsebridge. The walk uses hardly any of the previous routes. You will pass through the villages of Luckett Latchley and Gunnislake and finish at The Royal a splendid pub at Horsebridge.
